Defense set the tone - and ultimately decided the outcome.
The St. Louis Battlehawks opened their UFL campaign with a 16–10 victory over the DC Defenders on March 28, leaning on a disciplined defensive performance and just enough offensive production to secure the win.
In a game that never fully opened up offensively, St. Louis controlled the key moments and made the plays that mattered most.
First Half: Battlehawks Build Early Edge
St. Louis established control early, putting together scoring drives that gave them a lead heading into halftime.
While neither offense found consistent explosiveness, the Battlehawks were more efficient with their opportunities, converting drives into points and avoiding costly mistakes.
On the other side, DC struggled to sustain momentum offensively, frequently facing long down-and-distance situations that stalled drives.
Defenders Hang Around
Despite the slow start, the Defenders stayed within striking distance.
DC managed to get on the board and kept the game close by limiting big plays from the Battlehawks offense. The defensive effort allowed the Defenders to remain in the game, even as their offense searched for rhythm.
At no point did the game get out of reach, but it also never fully swung in DC’s favor.
Second Half: Defense Takes Over
The second half turned into a grind.
Both teams tightened up defensively, limiting explosive plays and forcing methodical drives. Scoring opportunities were limited, and every possession carried added weight.
St. Louis maintained its edge by continuing to control field position and avoid turnovers, while the defense consistently disrupted DC’s attempts to build momentum.
Closing Minutes: Battlehawks Hold Firm
With the Defenders pushing late for a potential tying drive, the Battlehawks defense delivered.
St. Louis prevented a breakthrough in the final stretch, forcing difficult situations and keeping DC from finding the end zone when it mattered most.
The defensive unit closed the game with composure, preserving the six-point advantage and securing the win.
