The Portland Thorns couldn’t hold onto an early advantage, falling 3–1 to the Kansas City Current on March 28 as Kansas City used a strong second-half push to secure the result.

After taking the lead in the opening half, Portland struggled to maintain control as the Current capitalized on key chances and shifted momentum after the break.

First Half: Thorns Strike First

Portland opened the match with energy and intent, creating early pressure in the attacking third.

That approach paid off when the Thorns found the opening goal, finishing a well-worked sequence to take a 1–0 lead. The early breakthrough gave Portland control of the tempo, allowing them to dictate possession for stretches of the first half.

Kansas City, however, remained composed and gradually worked back into the match.

Kansas City Responds

The Current found their equalizer before halftime, taking advantage of a scoring opportunity to level the match and reset the momentum.

The goal shifted the tone heading into the break, with Kansas City carrying confidence into the second half after erasing Portland’s early lead.

Second Half: Current Take Control

Kansas City came out of halftime with increased urgency and attacking sharpness.

The Current took the lead in the second half after building sustained pressure in the final third, breaking down Portland’s defensive shape and converting a key chance.

From there, Kansas City continued to push forward and added a third goal to extend the lead, putting the match out of reach.

Closing Stretch

Portland pushed for a response late, but Kansas City’s defensive organization limited clear opportunities.

The Current managed the final minutes effectively, controlling possession and preventing the Thorns from generating a comeback.
