Minnesota United Steal 1–0 Win Over FC Dallas in Defensive Clinic
FRISCO, Texas — You ever watch a team play a game so lopsided in possession that the soccer gods themselves start laughing? That was Saturday in Frisco. FC Dallas owned the ball, the tempo, and most of the fieldeverything except the scoreline. Minnesota United parked the bus, locked the doors, and then hit the gas when it mattered, escaping with a 1–0 win at Toyota Stadium thanks to an opportunistic strike from Anthony Markanich.
31st Minute: Gene’s Brilliance, Markanich’s Finish
The move that decided the match started with Owen Gene, Minnesota’s midfield engine and creative valve. Seeing a sliver of daylight between Dallas’s center backs, Gene sliced a through ball that looked more like a scalpel than a pass.
Anthony Markanich, darting behind the line, latched on to it cleanly. His first attempt was stopped by Michael Collodi — who might’ve been the best Dallas player on the field — but Markanich stayed alive, pounced on the rebound, and buried it. Cue the smattering of Minnesota fans celebrating like they’d just robbed Fort Knox.
Dallas Bring the Heat, Minnesota Stay Ice Cold
To their credit, Dallas kept pushing. They ended the night with 16 shots, which sounds dangerous until you notice only three of those were on target. They moved the ball well but collapsed in the final 18 yards — too many extra touches, not enough conviction.
Minnesota’s low block was a tactical masterclass. Fullbacks Markanich and Jefferson Díaz ran themselves into the ground. Every passing lane Dallas tried to exploit vanished the moment it appeared.
Second Half Survival: Loons Go Full Fortress Mode
The last 45 minutes were trench warfare. Dallas had the ball, Minnesota had the wall. Possession tilted even more lopsidedly toward the hosts, but they simply couldn’t crack the defensive shell. Wil Trapp shielded the back line like a veteran bouncer outside an exclusive club: you might get close, but you’re not getting in.
Meanwhile, Minnesota’s counterattacks became rarer but just as sharp. Gene and Kelvin Yeboah nearly combined again for a second goal in the 72nd minute on a break sparked by a Dallas turnover near midfield. Yeboah’s rolled shot forced Collodi into another solid save, one of several that kept Dallas vaguely alive.
By stoppage time, it was all desperation. Dallas sent even their goalkeeper forward on a last-ditch corner, but the cross floated harmlessly into Callender’s gloves. Cue full-time whistle, cue heartbreak.
Final
Minnesota United 1, FC Dallas 0
