San Diego FC controlled the shot count by a wide margin on Wednesday night, but it was Portland who controlled the scoreboard. The Timbers dispatched San Diego 3-1 in front of 20,617 fans at Providence Park, converting on quality over quantity to complete a season sweep of their expansion rivals, Portland's second win over San Diego in 2026.

Portland struck first in the 29th minute when Kristoffer Velde finished off a Cole Bassett assist to put the Timbers ahead. It pushed his season tally to 5 goals and 8 assists, tied for the team lead in combined contributions, and reinforced his status as the player San Diego simply couldn't account for all night.
San Diego's Gabriel Pirani provided the lone bright spot for the visitors, and goalkeeper efforts on both sides told the story of the underlying numbers San Diego managed just 2 saves against Portland's 5, a sign of how much more work the Timbers backline had to do to preserve the result.
Turning Point: Lassiter's Second-Half Response
San Diego's stoppage-time equalizer right before the break threatened to shift momentum firmly in the visitors' favor heading into the second half. Instead, Portland answered almost immediately, with Lassiter's 51st-minute goal snuffing out any San Diego momentum before it could build. From there, the Timbers controlled the match's biggest moments even as San Diego continued to dominate general play.

The win improved Portland to 8-9-3 on the season and lifted the Timbers into ninth place in the Western Conference squarely inside playoff position. Head coach Martí Cifuentes kept his postgame comments simple and direct: "Very happy [with the win]. Hopefully the first of many." With Velde playing at a season-best level and Lassiter riding a three-match contribution streak, Portland has real form to build on as the playoff race tightens.
