Rivalry games are supposed to feel a little unhinged, and Portland's 2 to 1 win over Seattle absolutely delivered.
After going behind early, the Timbers fought back through Kevin Kelsy, who scored the first half equalizer, before Brandon Bye buried the winner in the 82nd minute to send Providence Park into full eruption mode. The result pushed Portland up to eighth in the Western Conference, extended its unbeaten run to four matches, and handed Seattle a club record sixth straight loss.
Kelsy continued his breakout run in a big way. The 22 year old now has a club leading nine goals, and all nine have come in his last 11 appearances. He has also scored in three straight matches, giving Portland the kind of reliable attacking form every playoff chasing team needs at this point in the season.
Then Bye gave Portland its signature moment. His late strike was his first goal for the Timbers and could not have come in a better spot. In a rivalry match against Seattle, with the crowd ready to explode, it was the kind of winner that instantly makes a player part of the season's highlight reel.
The bigger picture matters too. Portland is now 3 0 1 since the midseason break and has outscored opponents 11 to 5 in that stretch. This was also the Timbers' first season sweep of Seattle since 2022, which adds even more juice to the result.
For Seattle, the story is much uglier. Six straight losses is the worst skid in club history, and this one had to sting more because it came against Portland with the game still there to be taken late.
The simplest takeaway is this: Portland looks like a team building real momentum, and Seattle looks like a team stuck in quicksand. On Saturday night, the Timbers had the last word and the better vibes.
