PORTLAND - If you needed a reminder that MLS chaos always comes in neon green, the Portland Timbers dropped a six‑goal sledgehammer on Sporting Kansas City Saturday night at Providence Park. This wasn’t a win, it was a club‑history rewrite. A 6–0 demolition. Largest margin of victory in Timbers history. Fastest four‑goal start in Timbers MLS era. Fourth‑fastest four‑goal burst in MLS history. Call it fireworks. Call it a statement. Call it whatever you want. Sporting Kansas City just wants to forget it happened.
The Avalanche: 26 Minutes of Sporting KC Pain
SKC barely had time to adjust to the Oregon humidity before Portland detonated.
6th minute - Kristoffer Velde
A short pass from David Da Costa, a touch into space, and Velde uncorked a violent, top‑corner screamer from beyond 25 yards. A goal so obscene it should require ID to watch.
It was Velde’s fourth of the season… tied for the team lead. At least for the moment.
15th minute - Kevin Kelsy
Kelsy, who played the entire night like someone farming a FIFA stat objective, buried a low left‑footed strike after Da Costa flicked him through with a classy backheel.
Two goals, two different ways to get humiliated.
22nd minute - Cole Bassett
Kelsy rose for a header, chaos followed, and Bassett, newly minted in green and gold, tapped home his first Timbers goal from six yards.
Three‑nil in 22 minutes. SKC’s nightmare had layers.
26th minute - Own Goal (Jake Davis)
Brandon Bye whipped a cross through the mixer, Sporting KC defenders attempted a clearance, and the ball deflected off Jake Davis directly into his own net.
At this point, it was reality TV: “How Bad Can This Get?” MLS Edition.
Historical Context: Portland Entered a Different Dimension
Four goals in 26 minutes:
• Fastest to four in Timbers MLS era
• Fourth fastest in MLS history
Before Portland added two more in the second half, they already had enough offense to populate a month’s worth of highlight packages.
This was also Portland’s first match scoring six since their 7–2 beatdown of… well… Sporting Kansas City in 2022. SKC is basically Timbers Twitter’s favorite punchline at this point.
Second Half: Lassiter and Kelsy Finish the Job
You’d think Portland might ease off. Nope. They scented blood.
71st minute - Ariel Lassiter
Lassiter, yes, the son of former KC striker Roy Lassiter, adding delicious generational spice - stepped up for a free kick from 25 yards.
Left‑footed. Over the wall. Upper 90.
A goal so disrespectful you almost had to look away.
74th minute - Kelsy Again
Three minutes later, Lassiter delivered a perfectly floated cross to the far post. Kelsy smashed home a first‑time finish to complete his brace and secure his fourth goal contribution of the night.
Two goals. Two assists. One therapy bill for the entire KC backline.
Portland didn’t just score - they shared. Every Timbers goalscorer also recorded an assist, and six players finished with goal contributions.
Sporting Kansas City: A Disaster in Slow Motion
Sporting KC entered this match on a seven‑game winless streak across all competitions. They leave on an eight‑game skid and their worst beating in club history.
Some lowlights:
• SKC trailed 4–0 at halftime for the first time ever in an MLS match.
• They were shut out for the seventh time at Providence Park, they’ve never returned home happy from that building.
• Their losing streak at Portland is now seven straight.
• They forced Portland’s first clean sheet of the season… which says everything.
The only bright spots came from desperation.
Dejan Joveljic nearly scored 45 seconds into the second half, denied only by James Pantemis at full stretch.
Capita got a look in the 58th minute. Also saved.
Zorhan Bassong, returning from injury, blasted a half‑volley that deflected just over the bar.
Calvin Harris forced a late save in the 89th minute.
SKC pressed, poked, and prayed. Nothing.
Pantemis slammed the door and snapped a 21‑game Timbers streak without a shutout.
Even Stefan Cleveland, the Timbers keeper, made one big save denying Alexander Aravena after he came off the bench hunting his first MLS goal.
Star Performances: A Portland Flex
Everywhere you looked, someone in green and gold played the game of their life:
Kevin Kelsy - 2 goals, 2 assists
A masterclass in movement, power, and killer instinct. He didn’t just score, he orchestrated. The best match of his MLS career.
Kristoffer Velde - 1 goal, 2 assists
His opening rocket set the tone, and he bossed the attacking half all night.
Cole Bassett - 1 goal, 1 assist
His first goal in Timbers colors? A poacher’s dream. His ball movement made life easy for the front line.
Ariel Lassiter - 1 goal, 1 assist
One of the prettiest free kicks in MLS this year. Also assisted Kelsy’s second.
David Da Costa - 2 assists
Da Costa spent the first half crafting chances like a puppeteer. His backheel assist to Kelsy was pure sauce.
James Pantemis - Clean sheet
Made two quality saves to preserve the historic scoreline.
This wasn’t just individual brilliance, it was a systemic meltdown of Sporting Kansas City’s defensive shape combined with a Portland attack firing at peak chemistry.
