Charlotte FC spent most of Friday night walking a tightrope, then finished like a team that knew exactly when to strike.

In a 2 to 0 win over Atlas FC at Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte survived an early scare, got a huge first half save from Tyler Miller, and then found its breakthrough late through Liel Abada before Tyger Smalls slammed the door in stoppage time. The result gave The Crown a second straight Leagues Cup win and stretched its home unbeaten run to five matches.

Atlas thought it had the opener in the 15th minute when Jose Martin scored, but the goal was wiped out for offside. That lifeline mattered, because Charlotte did not fully control the match early and needed a second big break before halftime. Miller delivered it with a one hand save in stoppage time, keeping the match scoreless and giving Charlotte a chance to reset.

The game finally turned in the 78th minute. Tyger Smalls drove the move forward and slipped a smart pass to Abada, who finished calmly for the opening goal. Then, in the final minute of added time, Smalls capped his night by scoring into an empty net to make it 2 to 0 and remove any doubt.

Smalls ended up with a goal and an assist, which made him the clear game changer. Abada supplied the finish Charlotte had been waiting on, and Miller's late first half stop gave the whole result its foundation.

This was not a perfect performance, but it was a sharp tournament win. Charlotte absorbed pressure, stayed alive when Atlas threatened, and took over the match when the key moments finally arrived. That is not always pretty, but in cup play it works just fine.
